Colored Pants

I never would have believed it, but I now own a complete set of colored pants--Wrangler jeans, to be more accurate. I've got black, red, grey, cream, and two pairs of green. We're talking denim, here. I took my old blue jeans to a friend, whose aunt is a professional seamstress, to be mended. My jeans had two holes, one of which was in a rather unfortunate location, that were getting larger at an alarming rate. My friend conveniently forgot, however, to bring my jeans to her aunt; she gave me the colored pants, instead, which had been donated to her brother, but which were the wrong size for him. Fortunately for me, though, they only needed to be shortened a few inches.

The moral of the story? The holier you are, the more colorful you can become!

It is true that the holier you are, the more colorful you become. It is also true that the holier you are, the less likely you are to appear in fashion ads. Red jeans? That sounds quite wild!

The laity, of course, are called to sanctify the temporal order. So what happens if you happen to already work in the fashion industry--and, in fact, model colored pants for a living? If you are "surprised by grace" and go through a conversion, does that necessarily mean finding another line of work? Or, could such a person, instead, strive to sanctify the fashion industry by bringing human and supernatural virtue to his work?

An example comes to mind, actually. Grabrielle Bossis, who recorded her conversations (interior locutions) with Jesus over a span of 14 years, was a French stage actress who lived from 1874 to 1950. Not that acting and modeling red Wrangler jeans (I never said I was a model...did I?) are exactly the same thing, but there is a connection. If a greasy, gray, religious habit doesn't draw attention and start conversations--which it always did--then perhaps startling colored pants would?
